The seeming similarities between trichotillomania and OCD are quite few. It may have the outward appearance of an obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and there are a few cases where a sufferer of "trich" may have a family history of OCD, but the similarities seem to stop there, at least in the diagnosis stage of things. The only other similarity between trichotillomania and OCD is in some of the drug therapies used to treat this condition, as many types of medications used in this technique are the same which are used to treat OCD.
Of those medications which are used to treat both trichotillomania and OCD, they generally are andidepressants that have serotonergic properties, Coropramine (otherwise known as Anafranil) being the most effective with the highest success rate of this type of therapy. However, drug related therapies as a whole generally have a low success rate overall, especially when compared to the more widely accepted behavioral therapies. In fact, quite often drug therapies are used in conjunction with therapies of a behavioral type, which to many may seem inordinately odd, considering the fact that behavioral therapies often have soaring success rates even as a stand-alone form of treatment.
Those who are being treated as though trichotillomania and OCD were one and the same have, as a result, begun to switch their treatments over to the purely behavioral type of therapy, and quite evidently, for good reason. Considering that the recent breakthroughs with certain behaviorally based treatments have allowed sufferers to be completely rid of this condition, showing results in mere minutes, it just seems the more prudent course.
